The process of selling your home and moving house can be really stressful. So when it comes to moving, you need to ensure you are well prepared. By planning ahead you should be able to reduced some of the additional stress on you when moving. Read on for my top tips for a smooth moving experience.

Plan your packing

Keep all your essentials packed into one easy to find box, close at hand so when the big day comes you can easily transition into your new property. I usually pack things like the kettle, a few mugs, personal care items such as my toothbrush. I transport this myself in my car to ensure it arrives when we do, so you can feel straight at home as soon as you get the keys.

When you are packing up boxes room by room, make things easier by labelling the boxes as you go. It is far easier to unpack boxes in the room that they belong in. Otherwise you will lose time moving individual items around the house.

Pick the right moving company

For movers in London, there are plenty of removal and storage companies to choose from. Don’t be afraid to get multiple quotes to ensure you get a competitive price. However, it’s not just price that you need to think about. Reputable and long serving companies often will have the experience to make the move go as smoothly as possible. You do need to remember to leave plenty of time to book them in as their services can be in high demand during peak times.

Prepare your new home

If the house you are buying needs renovation work, plan ahead and organise storage for your all of your furniture and boxes. Staying with family as an interim measure can help cut costs too.

We needed to renovate most of our house when we moved in, it would have been far better and quicker to have waited for the furniture to arrive after the work was done. We would have been able to get the project completed in a much faster time frame. Instead, we ended up moving our furniture multiple times during the renovation.

Arrange the utilities

It can be easily forgotten about, but you should let all your supplier know you are moving. Let them know your proposed moving date and final meter reading as soon as it becomes available.

Telephone and broadband suppliers can take their time to move your service over to a new property. So its important to let them know as soon as you have the confirmed moving date. There is nothing more frustrating than waiting for your internet service to return, especially if you have children waiting to get back online.

Don’t forget your post

Unfortunately I have had a negative experience from not forwarding my post for long enough, often important renewals will occur only once a year. For me this meant I missed the tax reminder on my car. Setting your mail to be redirected for a 12 month period will mean you should not miss any of those important letters and keep you safe from a fine.
