I have found that being forced to spend more time close to home has made the wife keener on renovation projects. Usually, she wants us to go off on holiday somewhere and its me that is begging to spend a little bit of money on the house. But these days she is ALL about the house. I have been researching some quick and easy home improvement projects I can start straightaway. Now I have her go-ahead, the house can be transformed in no time. Tackling unfinished jobs can be very rewarding.

Updating Tiles

My wife hates the tiles in our kitchen. I was looking at Stick and Go Adhesive Tiles as an easy option to give the kitchen a new lease of life. They are such a simple way to tile, you can stick them over existing tiles or even better on any smooth wall! A pet hate of mine is how dirty the tile grout can get, with stick on tiles on a fresh wall you do not have any more grout worries. Honestly, I feel like we have tried everything to whiten grout, from a paste of bicarbonate of soda to an application of vinegar water solution! However nothing seems to get it sparkling clean! The room just ends up stinking of vinegar! Most unattractive.

Adding Ceiling Trim

My wife keeps pointing out the occasional issues with my paintwork! When I did the walls in magnolia and the ceiling in white I sometimes slipped and didn’t touch up my handiwork. One way around this is adding ceiling trim or crown molding as some prefer to call it. It would make a clear distinction between the wall and ceiling and hide my paint marks! Plus, now our new plasterwork has settled we have the odd crack between the end of the wall and the ceiling. Ceiling trim can hide all of that!

Painting The Front Door

Your front door is pretty much one of the first impressions of a house. Ours is far from pretty! Paint is peeling off and its in such a sorry state. My wife wants us to get a new door, so our home looks more inviting. But a quick lick of paint would completely transform it without spending too much at all. Reading this article about door colour has given me inspiration. We have a lot of bad weather here so I think I should aim for something cheerful! Although anything would be a step up from its current condition.

Building Shelves

In our dining room we have space either side of our log burner, it would be great to add alcove shelves there. Storage space is a necessity in our house, my wife seems to collect board games and books. We are starting to be overrun with them! A more efficient storage system would give our home a much-needed lift!

Restoring Floor Tiles

Our hallway still has the original floor tiles. I think they are quite spectacular, but the wife is always in disagreement. She would happily get rid. However, I think if they could be restored and resealed it would be a big asset to our home when the time came to sell. You can buy Victorian tile putty to fill in any gaps that alongside a jolly good clean and I think the wife might have a new opinion of our tiles.

Fitting A Stove Mantel

When we had our log burner fitted we decided not to go ahead with a mantel. Yes, they looked fab, but we were on a tight budget and it was already a costly renovation project. We still regret that decision and I am thinking about adding my own. You can get non-combustible beams that look like real wood and add lots of character to the room. Fortunately going direct to the supplier seems a lot cheaper than using the company that fitted our stove.
