My eldest son has started having to write more complicated assignments and produce the occasional PowerPoint presentation.  We are trying to teach him the importance of putting adequate effort into his work.  Naturally we let him do the work, but we point him in the right direction to get the best resources to help him excel at what he is doing.  I thought it might help to share some of the font sites that we are familiar with that can make your presentations look incredible! 

Font Space 

Font Space has 64,000+ fonts you can download for free.  It was founded in 2006 and is very easy to use.  I really liked the Bored Crayon font created by an eight-year-old called Sam.  It is a bit quirkier than other fonts, probably because a kid designed it.  Some of the downloads are for personal use only, so not for commercial use.  Make sure you read the information on the download before deciding if it suits your purpose.  In the case of the Bored Crayon logo the owner wants to use any money he makes to fund a trip to Japan!  Love that passion to use his creativity energy to make travel dreams come true.   

Creative Market 

It’s worth checking out this site on a weekly basis as they giveaway one free font and other design assets that look great.  You can slowly build up a nice selection of fonts, but it will take time.  So, if you want access to lots of free fonts straight away this might not be the site for you.  But its worth popping in every now and then and seeing what they have available. 

Béhance  

This site has lots of free fonts to pick from.  You can search on the most viewed designs and see what is currently popular or just have a browse and see what takes your fancy!  Ideally you don’t want your project to look just like everyone else’s.  Your child will want to have their own concept so sometimes its best not to search most popular and just see what your eyes are drawn to scrolling through everything. 

fontstruct 

With this site you can build your own font out of geometrical shapes!  This is a great way for your child to come up with their own font ideas.  When your child is happy with their design, they can convert them into TrueType fonts.  This gets plus points from me because it gets your children to be more creative and involved in the process. 

Font Fabric 

Has a good choice of fonts but what I don’t like is they aren’t shown on posters etc.  Sometimes it’s nice seeing what a font will look like on something to feel truly inspired and want to use it.  Otherwise I think this site does have a lot of merit. 

Fontbundles 

I think this is my favourite site just because it looks more polished than some of the others.  Plus, we have experience using it and found it straight forward.  Fontbundles is a great alternative to Font Fabric I love how everything is displayed.  Some of the fonts you pay for but its worth the investment as they have some amazing fonts.  There bundle deals are incredible value too.  I like the sound of the Wonderful font bundle they have available currently.  For £18.76 you get 30 font families which would cost £293.10 normally!  That is exceptional value and the fonts are all really good quality. 

They do have lots of fonts free too on Fontbundles.net.  I love the Happy Popcorn font.  We might just have to download that to add to our collection.  I think its good that this site has interesting free fonts, because not all sites offer such good fonts like this.   

Neogrey 

Made by a graphic designer called Ivan Filipov there are some colourful eye-catching free fonts on his site.  I like his multicolore vector typeface best of all.  Check out how it looks below. 

His site just gives a taste of what he is capable of, so there isn’t a huge choice here, Fontbundles.net gives you much more to pick from.  But I do think the person behind Neogrey is very talented.  I can see why people would contact him to come up with a bespoke font or logo design.  I will be seeing what my son makes of some of his designs.  I think his next powerpoint presentation might really capture everyone’s attention with that multicolore vector typeface font. 

Font Squirrel 

Getting free fonts isn’t too tricky but being able to use them for commercial purposes is harder.  This site allows you to go beyond personal use with their free fonts.  Although the options are limited, and you might not find the fonts here are all singing and dancing like some sites I have already mentioned.  The site has simple instructions that are easy to follow when you want to install a font. 

Google Fonts 

This site has 980 font families you can type out a paragraph and see what it will look like in any of those fonts.  I like this feature that google fonts offers, then when you happy with your choice you can embed the font.  You also learn about more about the designers behind each font which can be an interesting read.  I haven’t tried embedding one of these yet so I can’t confirm how user friendly the process will be, if you have already tried Google Fonts please share your experiences below. 

Myfonts 

Boasts that they have 130,000 available fonts so you won’t be short on choice here.  They also show the fonts in actual articles/posters, so you get a proper feel for them.  I prefer this over some of the other sites as they only show the font itself.
