Giving your blog some kerb appeal

When I first started blogging a few years ago. I did not really think about the look of my blog all that much. I tweaked a few things here and there. But overall, did not give it much thought. Although looking back it looked quite cluttered and busy. An example of what it looked like at the start-up phase is shown below. If you want to be successful with your blog presentation is a big part of that. You can find more blogging tips in an earlier post I wrote.

Old Blog theme

A few years down the line I did a much-needed revamp. It is something as a blogger you rarely find time to give your blog a proper overhaul. Sometimes your too busy writing content or keeping up with social media posts. However, it can be so important when it comes to engagement and driving traffic!

In fact, it is probably time I have another look at it again! A fresh new look can work wonders and renew your enthusiasm in your blog. You do not want a visitor to arrive take one look and leave again, you want them to explore all your site, click through to other pages and really spend some time there. For them to be motivated to do that your blog needs some kerb appeal. I for one have clicked straight off sites that do not look slick and professional. You feel in more capable hands on a website that looks the part. It feels worth you time reading what they have got to say.

What are the key points I look for?

Template & resource

For WordPress there are loads of templates available to browse. A great resource like Theme Planet is worth checking out.

WordPress templates highlight:

Biscuit – WordPress Food Blogger

Blog theme

This WordPress theme takes a classic approach to a blogging layout. Perfectly laying out your new posts. With social buttons and about me located on the right-hand widget. This template allows you to really show off your photography skills as well as your writing.

With customisable drop-down menus allow the reader to easily find what they are looking for. With this theme it has automatic updates available, which is a handy feature to keep it fresh.

HTML5 templates highlight:

Manik Personal Portfolio

Blog theme 3

The key feature for me in the template is the great overview achieved. Not only can you outline yourself as an individual but your really can showcase your work. This can include your highlight collaborations for example. All this information made readily available for potential clients to see.

The robust contact me section is great, making reaching out a simple pleasure! There is a great flow to the template that quickly loads your new content as you scroll down. Leaving you with a trendy looking website.

Cost

I like to keep things as cheap as possible, however spending a bit of money on your new design has its benefits:

  • Bespoke design
  • Low error rates
  • Swifter load times

Keep prices in perspective, if you blog is earning a regular income then you can surely justify spending money on improving the kerb appeal of your blog! It can give you a real uplift and drive to continue to grow and create great content.

Accessibility

When you finally decide what theme you are looking for. Make sure the loading speed is swift. All functions work as expected, often I have found some of the social buttons needs updating. There is nothing worse than a few broken links on your main page!
