Kids Sharing A Room? How To Give Them Their Own Space

Renovating your home to suit you feels like a big project – and it is! However, once all the work is out of the way, your life will be far more convenient, and you’ll have a space you can really be proud of. And that’s especially true if any of your kids are sharing a room.

Daily you might hear arguments from upstairs, or they may come crying to you saying their sibling messed with their toys, and soon enough all the noise gets too much! How can you avoid this drama in the future and give your kids their own space within a room that’s not entirely their own? Here are a couple of ideas that might just be useful to you.

Set Up a Divider

A room divider is a good way to give your kids each their own space without needing to clear out another room or try to renovate. A simple screen in the middle, decorated on either side to match each child’s personality, and you’ve created a private space for the two of them without much effort. If that doesn’t suit you could use bookshelves and/or cubby holes and stack them up, decorate them in a similar manner, and also get a bit more storage out of it to boot!

Give Them Somewhere to Retreat to

You could set up a pillow and blanket fort, or help them construct and colour a cardboard castle. Either way, they can then head inside for some peace and quiet away from everyone else. Similarly, if they sleep in a bunk bed, set up shelves in each bunk for their most personal items to go. Once they’ve been placed, no one else is allowed to touch, and the bunks themselves will feel much more like theirs.

Invest in a Fitted Wardrobe

With built-in wardrobes, you can fit storage into the most awkward of spaces. Indeed, you can even fill in that annoying alcove space or take up a whole wall and happily split the closest into two. Plenty of space to fit all their different clothes, as well as their shoes and accessories (we all know how many princess crowns, fairy wands, and superhero cloaks they have!), and even some extra space just to shove anything that doesn’t fit into the new divided space.

Paint the Walls Differently on Each Side

Finally, why not let each of your kids decorate their own side without much adult intervention? Sure, you can mount stencils and painting tape for them, but let them pick the colour, wallpaper, or pattern and let them use the brushes and rollers. They’ll love being able to have some kind of creative freedom over their own space, and it will truly make it feel like theirs once they’re all done.

If your kids share a room and it’s becoming a problem, look to solutions like this to stop any bickering. Sharing is sometimes a necessity but it doesn’t have to be bad!
