Is My Child Old Enough to be Left at Home Alone?
When your child is of the right age, usually around teenager age. You can now consider if you’d like to leave your child on their own for a while. Parents have lives to tend to as well. But it’s about managing your expectations and knowing what your child can handle without you around when they are home alone.
In this guide from an independent school in Harrow, we take a look at the considerations involved in deciding when you can leave your child at home alone.
Home considerations
Probably the biggest thing to consider is the amount of responsibility your child will have to handle. You may have pets that need looking after, or your child has a brother or sister to keep an eye on. If there are a lot of moving parts to consider then find a happy medium. Or a way to reduce the time your children spend at home alone.
Your child’s management of tasks
Some children mature faster than others. Which is entirely dependent on the upbringing they’ve had and the amount of responsibilities they have. Your child should have a good understanding of how to manage things in the home and what to do if there was an emergency. Chores, other additional tasks around the home and hobbies your child is invested in will help them develop responsibility.
The length of time your child is left alone
In an ideal world your child would only need to be left alone for a few hours at maximum. If it’s going to be longer than that, it may be worth looking at having your child stay at a friend’s or relatives for a little while. Use your judgement when it comes to these things. Test your child’s ability to manage by increasing their time left alone each time, but start small. It’s important to give your child the means to at least try and never make them feel comfortable.
