Helping Your Child Develop their Problem Solving Skills

Developing adequate problem solving skills is a crucial part of growing up and something that parents should try and help their children with. Without these skills, your child will struggle in the face of adversity and find it difficult to overcome challenges. Here are some tips from a private nursery in Wales on how you can teach your child problem-solving skills.

Encourage Resilience

When tackling a problem, giving up is rarely the solution. With that said, try and encourage your child to be resilient in the face of adversity. Praise them when you see that they’re working hard to try and overcome an obstacle and let them know how proud you are. Remind them that even adults make mistakes sometimes and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, as long as we keep trying.

Promote Independence

Your child will never learn how to deal with problems if you are always there to solve them on their behalf. So, give your child some space to work things out independently rather than rushing to their side to save the day every time something seems to be going wrong.

Break Things Down

Show your child how to break bigger problems down into smaller chunks because those will feel less overwhelming. For instance, if they are panicking because they have too much homework and other tasks to complete, help them write a list in order of importance so that they can tackle things one at a time.

Explore the Options

Another way to help your child with problem solving is to teach them that sometimes there is more than one solution. Ask them to think about alternative options before the jump into something straight away, and perhaps even encourage them to write a pros and cons list of each of the possibilities. This will help them with their critical thinking skills, which are a key component of problem solving.
