How to Raise a Resilient Child

Children often face their own issues and problems whether they’re at home or within school time. They could be quite simple to solve or actually quite difficult to navigate, but what’s important is how your child reacts to the situation and how they can bounce back afterwards.  Read on for more on how to raise a resilient child.

Using a series of strategies to test your child will give them more confidence, self-esteem and resilience skills in the future. This guide courtesy of this senior school in Bath will show you how to raise a resilient child.

Use coping methods

Coping mechanisms are a way for anyone to calm down after a problematic situation has happened in front of them. They can be lots of long deep breaths or taking a break and walking away from the situation. These are ways of alleviating a person from a stressful situation in order to combat their anxiety.

Anxiety is common through all walks of life, so showing your child these mechanisms will give them the chance to recollect and think about the situation without it getting heated.

Explain different feelings to your child

Your child may not understand how they are feeling at the time, nor could they understand why they are feeling a certain way. If one of their friends says something hurtful, for example, then they could feel anger, hate and disappointment.

In these cases you should take your child away from the situation and ask them how they’re feeling. If they’re not sure what they are feeling then they can explain it to you. If they know how to identify feelings then they’re more likely to piece together what’s happening and how they can bounce back from it.

Children are inquisitive, clever and intuitive. They will learn a lot from their parents as they age, so giving them the proper advice early on will arm them to be resilient in future situations.
