Encouraging Your Kids to Be More Active

Kids these days can be a lot less active than they used to be. The appeal of sitting in front of a screen or doing activities indoors often means they would rather not put in any physical effort if they don’t have to. Plus, many children have bad experiences in PE at school, which puts them off being active outside of school. It can be tough to encourage your kids to be more active if they don’t see the benefit in it, but it’s important for their health. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to encourage them to be more active even if they’re not very enthusiastic about exercise.

Find a Fun Activity

If you want your children to exercise, you need to make exercise enjoyable. A lot of adults feel like they have to force themselves to do things they don’t like so they keep fit, but that’s not really the case. Everyone can find activities that they enjoy and help them move more. One option for kids is to find an organisation like J’amies Gymnastics Academy where children can have lessons and fun sessions doing things they love. Of course, the important thing to do is to let them choose something they think will be fun. Forcing them to do something they don’t like won’t make them want to exercise more.

Incorporate Activity Into Your Day

One of the easiest ways to get kids to move more is to incorporate activity into their everyday routine. It can get them moving without them even realising that’s what is happening. For example, you can walk or cycle to some places to increase their activity levels. Or you can encourage them to help you around the house and garden, which will get them moving in different ways. Try to schedule exercise into your child’s day too so that it becomes part of their usual routine.

Be a Good Role Model

It’s difficult to ask your children to be more active if you’re not asking the same of yourself. A lot of parents want to make sure their kids get plenty of exercise but don’t have their own workout routine. Being a good role model and demonstrating the importance of keeping fit is really helpful if you want your kids to be active. This might mean having your own activities that you do on your own (a great way to get a break from the kids!) or it could be exercising together with your children.

Don’t Turn Exercise Into a Negative

It’s always important to make sure exercise is a positive thing if you want your child to have a good relationship with it. It’s essential to avoid ever using it as a punishment or pushing your child beyond their limits. It can be especially important to give children positive associations with exercise at home when many of them don’t enjoy having to be active at school.

Encouraging your children to be more active helps them to form good habits so they can continue to look after their health as they get older.
