It’s important you take steps to secure your home. Basically, you want to make it less of an attractive proposition for burglars. For example, they might be put off by dogs and home security systems.  Make sure whenever you leave your property all windows and doors are locked. It’s easier in the warmer weather to forget a window has been left open. But burglars are very opportunist.  

Make it as difficult as possible for them to enter your property. It’s essential to identify weaknesses in your home security and address them immediately. The UK has high rates of burglary compared to other parts of Europe. Rather surprisingly burglaries are actually more common in the day than at night. They tend to aim for your house then knowing everyone might be at work or school. 

Solid Doors And Windows 

You want strong doors to secure your home that can resist force and even being kicked. High Security Doors and Windows are the safest bet. Make sure you choose a company that focuses on high security hardware with quality materials and techniques.  

If you opt to have plexiglas windows these are extremely strong. They are actually ten times stronger than regular glass. Due to the cost, you could just use plexiglas in some of your windows, perhaps the ground floors ones. 

In hot weather if you really feel like you have to keep your window open then aim to open doors facing the streetlights and overlocked by neighbours, so a burglar is less inclined to enter your property that way.  

Motion Lights 

Burglars like to work without being seen. Therefore, installing motion lights draws attention to them straight away. A constant outdoor light isn’t always as effective, it can actually be to the burglars advantage as they can easily identify weak points. Plus, if its suddenly left on all the time for a week or two then it might be a sign your away. Which brings me on to the next point… 

Think Like A Burglar 

They will be looking for certain signs to identify empty properties. Use timers to turn on lights and the radio for sound. You don’t want your mail to build up or to show an empty driveway. Ask a neighbour with two cars if they can leave one on your drive. You need to make sure you act like someone is at home at all times. Also, if you get a new TV or computer don’t leave the boxes outside your house all week waiting for recycling to collect them. Otherwise, your house will look much more tempting to burglars.  

Social Media 

In an ideal world only mention your holiday when you return home. I mean how well do you really know everyone on your social profiles. Especially when friends of friends always end up seeing more than they should! 

Always make sure your social profiles are locked down to private. You don’t want to advertise the fact your home is empty. 

Use Your Phone 

You can control many home security systems with your phone.  You can do things like turn lights on and off and you can view your security feed at any time. Whilst security cameras can detect movement and send you an alert so you know it’s definitely time to double check what’s going on back at home. 

Neighbours 

Think about starting your own neighbourhood watch group. It’s great if you get on well with your neighbours and can help look out for each other’s properties.
