Take a look back at how the ‘ideal’ male body has changed

Over recent years there has been an increased amount of pressure when it comes to our physiques and our overall appearance. The rise of social media has played a big part in this. With men in particular feeling a sense of anxiety when it comes to seeing how others males look. Which inevitably leads to them comparing themselves and potentially wanting to change the way they look.

Many people believe this subject has only been an issue over recent years. However it actually dates back throughout history. From the Ancient Greeks to the more recent golden age of Hollywood; the ‘ideal’ male body image has seen many men strive to achieve these desirable physiques. But found it impossible or suffered with health side effects because of it.

To prove just how long this taboo has been in existence,  Chemist Click  have carried out some research to see just how the ‘ideal’ male body has changed throughout history. Below are some of the examples.

Ancient Greece:  800 BC – 146 BC

It’s more than likely you’ll have seen a painting or image created during Ancient Greek times. Furthermore you will have probably noticed that the majority of the men during this era were depicted to have chiseled physiques. Often the male body is seen to be muscular, lean and thin waisted. It was the desired image for many Greek men and still is today. But in reality, it is and would have been very hard to achieve.

When it came to the hairstyles during Ancient Greek times, men would often opt for long hair. This was kept tidy by the use of a headband. It was said that hairstyles like these created a profile of wealth and power.

The Golden Age of Hollywood:  1920s – late 1950s

As technology started to advance during the 20th Century, commercial motion pictures were on the rise which had an impact on how men wanted to look. People started to notice that when watching themselves on the big screen, it was portraying a larger appearance to that in reality. As a result of this, many people wanted to achieve a more athletic and clean-cut physique. This was adopted by actors such as Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart.

The preferred hairstyle for men during this time was a short to medium taper haircut. This cut meant that either a side-parting or slick-back look could be achieved, depending on each individual’s preference.

The Age of the ‘Dad Bod’:  2015 – present

Over recent years the ‘Dad Bod’ has become increasingly popular with men all over the world. Favoured by actors such as Chris Pratt and Seth Rogan. The ‘Dad Bod’ allows men to have a healthy body shape, without having to aim for a muscular and chiseled physique. This popular body image has been backed by many (and certainly me!). As it aims to combat the body-shaming issue which men have been facing for years.

Although there are a selection of popular hairstyles in today’s era, a large number of men opt for the classic faded crew cut. This style allows for a neat and tidy appearance as well as being easy to manage.

After taking a look back throughout history, you can see that men have been faced with body images issues for some time now. From feeling like we need to achieve a muscular physique to now being able to be confident with our ‘Dad Bods”. Men have come a long way when it comes to how we view our own body image.

It would be great to hear what you think of this subject. Also if you have ever faced any body-shaming issues. Join in the conversation on social, using #NoTypicalMan.
