Further Improve your deep sleep quality
As you have known for years, I have been searching for ways to improve my deep sleep quality. Having good sleep hygiene is an important aspect when it comes to the quality of sleep. However, since changing over to a Simba mattress, I have realised that I was a hot sleeper and there should be place more of an emphasis on this aspect of sleep health to ensure we get the best quality deep sleep as we deserve.
What is a hot sleeper?
A hot sleeper (like me) is someone who wakes regularly in the night feeling uncomfortably warm. I would wake covered in sweat despite it being a cold winters night. Struggling to go back to sleep I would often have to hang one foot (or the whole side of my body) out of the covers to try and get back to sleep.
How do I manage to sleep cooler?
Reduced my duvet tog rating
I only dropped the tog rating from 10.5 to 9, but it seemed to make all the difference for me. My wife often gets cold in the night, but she hasn’t felt the change, and it seems to be a really good middle ground for us.
Changed to cotton bed linen
Changing the fabric to cotton which is more breathable meaning it won’t hold the heat or moisture as much as a synthetic blend. This will allow for a more comfortable and temperature regulated sleep. It also gives us the chance to change up the bedroom a little adding a little splash of colour to refresh the room.
Reduced the room temperature
Reducing the overnight heating in the house has not only helped me get more sleep but also reduced our monthly bills. By all means you could try opening a window overnight, however I do not like creating a security risk or listening to the noise from passing traffic. Some of my friends suggested a fan overnight, they like the additional white noise, but that type of white noise wasn’t something we could tolerate. However, it is definitely worth a go.
Changed my mattress to a Double Hybrid Mattress
Not only do these mattresses have an open structure foam design to support better airflow through the mattress it has been infused with graphite which is known to dissipate heat. The mattress is firm, so you don’t end up getting hugged or sinking in to heavily into the mattress, which used to make me much sweatier in the night.
Take a cooler shower before bed
This does seem to be working your feel so much more refreshed getting in bed after a cooler shower. I don’t mean cold as I could not face that, I did try, instead I have started to turn the heat dial down one by one. Until I found the perfect not too cold setting.
For me making these changes has definitely helped me achieve a more comfortable sleep at night. Staying in a deep sleep state for longer which is so important to feel refreshed by the morning. I hope by you trying some of these changes it really helps you to improve your sleep quality and get you back on track as a hot sleeper.
