Tips for Easing Stress as a Busy Parent

If want tips for easing stress as a busy parent then you have come to the right place. This guide will show you all of the things you can do to try and unwind in your spare time.

Be Nice to Yourself

When you are feeling a little down, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. While you might not be in the right mind to compliment yourself, you need to be compassionate. You can even try to do something nice for someone else if you want to boost your mental health. Little actions like this can help you to focus on the good things in life, and it also helps you to melt stress away.

Workout

Sometimes, a short walk is all you need to start feeling better about yourself. Climb some stairs or go on a visit to a park in your local area. Regular exercise can also boost your mood while helping you to concentrate more. If you feel as though stress and anxiety is something that you struggle with, then working out is certainly the best way to combat that in a way that is both healthy and productive.

Eat Well

As a busy parent, you may find that it is difficult for you to eat well. You may find that you are surviving on coffee and that you simply don’t have the energy to try anything else. This is understandable, but if you can make a change then you may find that your energy levels naturally increase. Changing your mindset to food can be difficult, but that doesn’t mean that it is impossible. Focus on swapping out one meal a day for a healthier option. For breakfast, instead of having microwavable pancakes, opt for overnight oats. If you can do this for a week without signs of stopping then you will then find it easier to make a more widespread change. Encouraging your kids to eat well will help them quite a lot as well, so make sure that you keep that in mind.

Sleep Well

It’s recommended that teenagers get anywhere between 8 and 10 hours of sleep, every night. Adults only need around 7 hours. Sleeping well doesn’t just refer to how many hours you get at night, however. It also refers to how well you sleep. Try and make your bedroom into a relaxing space. It may be that you repaint the room in a more calming color, or that you buy some plants and relaxing candles to set the mood. Either way, quality of sleep is just as important as quantity. If you find it hard to sleep because you have a young baby and they have you up a lot at night, then look up a sample 6-month old sleep schedule, so you can try and get them into a good routine.

Ditch the Screen

Studies have shown time and time again that if you look at a screen before bed then this can impact how quickly you fall asleep. It can also impact the quality of sleep you get as well. The main reason for this is because your smartphone will inhibit the production of melatonin, which is the hormone that is responsible for regulating your sleep and wake cycle. Reading, although relaxing, will also impact this if you use a Kindle or a smartphone. If you want to work around this then make the effort to buy an eReader that has no backlight. You can then buy a lamp for your room, so you don’t interrupt your sleep cycle.

Breathe Deeply

Do what you can to take nice and shallow breaths. Start from your stomach and then expand right through to your ribs. Breathe out again, just as slowly. If you can do this and repeat it, you will be able to calm down your body’s stress response. This will help you out if you are stressed in the moment, so make sure that you keep this in mind the next time things get too much. By regulating your stress during the day, you can make it easier to relax at night.

Connect with Others

connection

Pets, friends and family can all boost feelings of positivity. This can also ward off anxiety and depression. Focus on the general quality of your friendships, rather than the quantity. If someone is helping you and you feel supported or loved, then do what you can to keep that connection going. If someone makes you feel the opposite, or if they make it hard for you to feel good about yourself, then this is an indicator that you need to let them go in your life.

Write Things Down

Relaxing is easy to say, but hard to do. Unwinding and staying calm takes a lot of practice. If you want to benefit yourself then write down all the things you can do to de-stress. When something works, try it again, and make a note of it. Just remember that your overall aim here is wellness. Short-term fixes are not going to help you over the long run, so avoid alcohol and don’t focus on sugary beverages to get you through the day. These will leave you crashing and it will make you feel worse overall. By writing things down, you can help yourself to see through the chaos, and you can also make much better choices in terms of the way that you cope with things, so be mindful of that if you can. It’ll make a major difference to your life.

Just Stop

coffee break

When you drop the kids off at school, you may be in a rush to get some jobs around the house done. The dog might need a walk and your kids may need their uniforms washed for football practice. That being said, if you don’t stop from time to time then you may find that you end up adding to your stress more than you realize. One way for you to benefit yourself would be for you to stop and focus on being in the moment. Sit down with a cup of coffee, and just have five minutes for yourself. Five minutes won’t impact the jobs that have to be done, but it will make a major difference to your mental health. If you can focus on giving yourself these small windows of time, then you may find that you end up going on to benefit your mental health and that you end up getting way more done.

Talk to Someone

Sometimes, all you need to do is simply talk it out. Talk with someone who you can trust, whether it is a family member, colleague or someone who cares about you. If you can do this and talk about what you are feeling then this will help you to process your emotions. Remember, there is nothing wrong with being stressed and overwhelmed as a parent. It’s normal. If you talk to other people then you may even find that they feel the same way, and this could be just the kind of support network you need. It may also be worth seeing if other parents can help you as well. They may offer to take your kids to basketball practice along with their kids, for example. This might not seem like a big task, but at the end of the day, it is a great way for you to cut down on the number of things you have to do in the day, and it carves out more time for you.
