Free up floor space

The first thing to do is work out how much floor space you actually need. Is your bathroom floor cluttered with unnecessary accessories and furniture that could be utilised elsewhere?

Opting for wall-mounted items allows for a stunning aesthetic. Plus it makes the perilous task of cleaning so much easier. Wall hung basins for example add a touch of style but also free up a little more floor space that you could choose to use for some storage or not even use at all! Depending on the style you have settled on, you could find classic or contemporary styles of mounted basins and vanity units easily. Just make sure the rest of the bathroom follows the same theme. You want to ensure nothing looks out of place!

Re-do the bathroom floor

Sticking with the subject of the floor, opting for a luxury vinyl tile bathroom floor not only provides you with a durable, high quality and slip-resistant surface but one that can help change perceptions of your bathroom.

Luxury vinyl tiling, also known as LVT flooring, comes in a host of styles and colours. Opt for the patterns or styles that are predominantly dark in colour and when accompanied by a light-coloured wall, a natural optical illusion occurs. Doing this will help make the bathroom look bigger. This is further enhanced if you tile your wall with white tiling.

Patterned floor tiles work best on this. Therefore shop around for some that suit the style you want your bathroom to accentuate. But ensure they are up to the job of being safe, durable, and easy to maintain. Otherwise, you could be starting this project again sooner than you had hoped.

Use your corners well

Corners are commonly wasted in many rooms. Especially in the larger ones. If you were to look around your living room, bedroom, or kitchen, chances are, there are empty corners. Each of these could benefit from being used to enhance the room.

Smaller rooms make this harder to achieve but with limited space, it is often essential. A corner shower enclosure is a great way to make the most of the corners you tend to ignore. This then leaves additional floor space to make use of. You can also do the same with toilets. However, depending on how the plumbing is set up in your home, you could find that this job ends up costing quite a lot more to put into place.

Enhance lighting opportunities

Cheap to implement but potentially priceless in the added effect it gives. A well-lit bathroom helps make it look much larger. You don’t have to opt for a large feature light to make this work either.

Ceiling integrated LED lights provide an economical, long-lasting and bright effect which when combined with an LVT floor deliver an impression of a much larger room.

A bathroom mirror fitted with lights is also worth considering and can help add a little life to a small room. Opt for mood lighting that can be controlled via voice command or your phone so that should a relaxing soak be needed, the ambience can be altered to fit the desired mood.

Consider underfloor heating

This may not have been a thought that first jumped into your mind, but it provides benefits that you may not have yet thought of. Underfloor heating not only keeps the feet toasty when you hop out of the bath or shower, but it also provides some additional space savings that you may not have thought about.

It also works well with the LVT flooring we mentioned earlier, with no risk of it warping, stretching or cracking.

Underfloor heating also removes the additional fixtures and fittings more standard heating methods use, giving you additional floor space and therefore increasing the impression of the bathroom being bigger than what it is.

Combine where you can

Combination bathroom furniture can go some way to not only help you keep costs down, but it can also deliver huge space-saving benefits. A combi toilet and basin for example means more floor space and more floor space makes for a larger impression of room size. These items tend to cost less than buying them as individual items so your budget isn’t dented quite so hard allowing you to either save some cash or invest in additional changes to your bathroom.

You can also do this with items that are fixed to the walls too. A mirrored bathroom cabinet sounds like an obvious choice but many people still opt for a separate mirror and cabinet. This can make the walls look cluttered and reduce the impression of the available space.

Remove the bath

This could be one of the more expensive options, especially if you do not have a shower installed but if you have the budget to install a new shower and remove the bath. Do it! The amount of floor space you gain from removing a bath and installing a corner shower will vastly increase the available floor space and help make your bathroom look so much bigger. You can even go all out and have a shower cabin then!
