Why is reading so important for children?

Reading allows individuals the chance to be transported from one world to another within seconds. Between the words and pages of a book, we can easily be absorbed by the lives of the characters and learn about settings, cultures and traditions that are entirely different to our own.

Due to the learning potential that reading has, teachers and parents are in a great position to encourage their young ones to make it a key part of a child’s daily routine. Reading allows children to develop empathy. When we read a book, we put ourselves into the shoes of the character and are able to feel most of what they feel. Children can use this understanding to empathise with people in the real world. Through regular reading, children will gain a greater understanding on big emotions so that they are able to develop socially.

Children are able to gain a deeper understanding purely through the written word. A book has the ability to take his absolutely anywhere. This could be a city, a country or even an imaginary world. By reading, your child can easily understand different cultures, religions, traditions, events and even time spaces. This gives them a deeper understanding of the world around them and how they differ to their own norms and values.

Reading improves literary skills. Reading out loud with children will give them the confidence to begin doing it by themselves. You can start reading to a child even at the earliest months of their lives. As it can really help with language. Furthermore, hearing words being spoken out loud can help children develop their vocabulary as they will be introduced to words that they have not heard before which is why this skill is one of the most important things a child can learn.
