If your child’s approaching their final years at school, It’s probably time that you think of next steps and what they want to do once they leave. There are many options available to them with a range of both A level and BTEC courses. The apprenticeship route is another worth considering if they’re looking to gain hands-on experience and learn whilst earning. There are advantages and disadvantages of each and it all ultimately comes down to them and their individual needs. This guide solely focuses on BTECs and answers all of the questions commonly asked by parents.
What Is a BTEC?
If you have never come across the term, BTEC stands for Business and Technology Education Council. Their qualifications are related to specialist work and combine a mix of practical and theory. Unlike A levels, they are predominantly course work based which is great for those that learn through hands-on means.
Can They Be Studied Alongside A Levels?
Depending on the type of qualification that your child chooses to do, they can study both A levels and BTECs. This will come down to the study hours required for each and whether they fit into their timetable.
How Can I Help My Child Choose the Right Courses?
It’s important that children choose subjects that they enjoy and align with their interests/goals. This is something that you can discuss with them and explore by visiting a college/sixth form.
How Can I Support My Child with Their BTECs?
As always, it’s important that you create a healthy environment at home so that they are able to rest, study and thrive. A routine is also important and something that you can help them to establish by helping them to create a study timetable.
