During lockdown there was a DIY boom when everyone wanted to tackle home improvements. It made sense, I guess. Naturally, we all wanted to spend money improving our homes given we are spending so much more time in them. In Wales we just finished our Firebreak and England are now onto their second lockdown, so it was more of the same really. I think it had made us appreciate our homes all the more. My wife was always focusing on holidays before this. But even she would prefer we do up our house now.

Get The Professionals In

But not every DIY story was a success during lockdown. Many wished they had waited for the professionals. Someone can come in and manage the whole project for you from start to finish.

Given how much DIY mistakes can cost to fix it can work out in your favour getting the professionals in. Less stress and less chaos and better for martial relationships! I write from experience, my wife won’t let me go anymore near the light fittings anymore after I smashed an expensive one on the floor. She says its cheaper to pay for an electrician instead.

Tradesmen Can Still Work

Fortunately, tradesmen can continue to work during these lockdowns, as long as they follow the COVID safety guidelines. So, don’t feel you have to take matters into your own hands because you think they can’t enter your property. Just make sure you keep that 2-meter distance. I feel a bit bad you’re not encouraged to give them refreshments though! It seems a bit mean not to offer a cuppa, but its all part of the safety guidelines. You can do sensible things like open internal doors ready for workmen, so they touch less surfaces.

The Trend Is Set To Continue

With so much uncertainty still surrounding COVID, its normal to feel safer staying closer to home. So, the trend of increased home improvements is likely to continue. It makes sense to be prepared in case we need to spend another long time in lockdown. Barclaycard said that the spend on home improvement was up 26 per cent compared to September last year. So, if you do want to have more home improvements make sure you book up the tradesmen as quick as possible, they are in high demand!
