One very easy way to show your child that you’re invested in their education is by chatting to them after school each day. Make sure you ask open ended questions so that they can’t shrug you off with a one word answer and mix up what you talk about each day so that it doesn’t become boring. Here are some things you could ask your child: 

• What lessons did you have today? Which lesson was your favourite? What did you like about it? What did you learn? Which lesson was your least favourite? Why didn’t you like it? 
• Who did you sit next to in class today? What are they like? Would you like to invite them round after school one day? 
• Are there any teachers or classmates that you don’t like? Why don’t you like them? 

Aim

Essentially, the aim is to get them to open up to you about how they’re feeling and if there’s anything that might be bothering them. Like a difficult subject, a bully or a mean teacher. Asking your child about their day will show that you care, while also giving your child an opportunity to open up to you and get things off their chest if necessary. 

You should also offer to help your child with their homework so that they don’t feel so alone when things aren’t going their way.
