Many of us dream of a beautiful garden to relax, pick bountiful harvests of fruits and veggies and entertain guests in.  

However, the effort required to build the garden of our dreams often outweighs the motivation to get off of our bottoms and do something! Hiring a gardener could be the key to you unlocking that last push to get you out there and tending to your plants. Sounds counter intuitive, but bear with me.  

Here are four reasons why hiring a gardener to do the dirty work could transform your black thumbs into green ones! 

Let them do the dirty work

One of the top reasons we neglect to cultivate our gardens into the verdant paradises we dream of is that kneeling in the dirt doesn’t seem like a fun way to spend a drizzly Saturday afternoon. However, if it could give you everything you’d ever dreamed of in a garden, would you do it?  

Probably not. And that’s okay! You’re allowed to have priorities and to value your time in the way you see fit. You can choose to forget about having the garden of your dreams entirely or… Hire a gardener! They won’t mind getting down and dirty while you sit under a blanket watching TGBB. 

You don’t have to be the height of sophistication (or be rich) to hire a gardener. Talk to them about the options available to you and how they could do the things you’d rather not do. If you don’t mind pruning every once in a while, how about you stick to that? Do the jobs you actually enjoy doing and let them do what they love to do. 

You’ve invested money now! 

Spending money on time-saving things actually makes us happier, as opposed to spending money on things which does not. This finding boosts the already established idea that by spending money on something, you care more about said thing. It has value to you now.  

The same goes for gardening! A neglected garden may cause discomfort and unease, but not in a big way. Unless you start spending money on it. You want your investment to have good returns, so you may even start gardening more to make sure the money you spent on a gardener pays off.  

Invest money by hiring a gardener and you’ll find yourself thinking about ways to improve your garden and save money at the same time. Your gardener can help you with this. Part of their job is to advise you and recommend what you should do to make the garden into what you want it to be, which can be invaluable if you don’t know your trowel from your hoe.

Gardeners come with years of expertise, training and experience that you simply cannot replicate (unless you are an avid gardener and have a full-time job, in which case, congratulations on being productive person of the year!) without time and effort. It’s okay if you want to pay someone else who does have the time and effort under their belts already.  

They will advise you as to how you can use the time and money available to you to your advantage. Whether you want a place to relax, harvest fruit and veggies, raise a few animals or entertain guests, a gardener will be able to let you know how you can achieve your goals within your timeframe and budget.  

Simply having a chat could spark a passion for your garden that you didn’t know was within you. There are so many ways to garden, so speak to someone who knows what they’re doing. 

Reap the benefits of their work 

Now, it might not be the case that having a gardener do the dirty work would inspire you to get out there, and that’s okay. However, once you see the results of their work and the amount of time it took them to do it (less than you might imagine), you might change your mind.  

The work they put in is well worth the money they charge (if they are reputable), and the benefits you get from a gardener depend solely on what you ask from them. When you see the results of their work and benefit from it, you will say to yourself “why can’t I make something like this happen?”. The good news is, you can! 

Learn from their work, help them where you can and honestly, after the bulk of the work is done there’s only some maintenance left to do. Of course, you can hire a garden maintenance professional while you do the fun gardening tasks.  

It’s up to you to decide how to take care of your garden, but if you don’t have a great track record for keeping up with the day-to-day maintenance, hiring a gardener might be the best thing. Keep your outdoor space beautiful, enjoy it and you will find a renewed interest in doing some gardening tasks yourself!
